Legal basis
Basis: SGB IV § 8 (Minijob definition, Germany). The current threshold is € 603/month and is coupled to the statutory minimum wage (threshold = MiLoG × 130 / 3). An additional honorary activity may be paid up to € 3,000 / year tax- and contribution-free via the Übungsleiterpauschale (§ 3 Nr. 26 EStG).

How the Minijob threshold is calculated
Since October 2022 the threshold is dynamically linked to the statutory minimum wage (MiLoG). The formula in §8 SGB IV: minimum wage times 130, divided by three, rounded up to full euros. For 2026, at 13.90 euros per hour, that gives exactly 603 euros per month. The value changes with every minimum-wage adjustment, so confirm the current figure with the Minijob-Zentrale or your Steuerberater.
What happens above the threshold
If regular monthly pay exceeds 603 euros, the job is no longer a Minijob but falls into the Gleitzone, often called a Midijob. In 2026 the Gleitzone runs up to 2,000 euros, with a reduced, gradually rising employee share of social security contributions while the employer pays almost the full share. Occasional unforeseeable overruns are tolerated within limits; permanently higher pay makes the job fully insurance-liable.
